A totally stupid question

What is the difference between an image and a snapshot? Why is it proposed to create an image rather than a snapshot to backup a server? I rtfm, but I admit that I do not understand and I do not want to bite my fingers in case of problems. Thank you !

Hi @bertrandb,

An image is a complete backup of your server including all volumes.
A snapshot can be done from a specific volume (i.e. you have a server with a volume containing the OS and another one containing the application data and you want to use different snapshot strategies on both volumes).

Creating snapshot of your volumes gives you total freedom which volumes you want to back up whilst images are convenient for full backups of your instance.

Thanks for your answer (and sorry to say it so late !). It’s clear now !
